The "Fountain of Love" is a monument that tells how young people in Matera, in the heart of the Sassi districts, in a past marked by extreme poverty and backwardness, could fall in love with simple gestures and habits. One of the most common circumstances was that the boys were waiting for a girl to come near the public wells to draw water.

This happened, for example, in Via Muro, a descent that leads from Civita to Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, at the gates of Sasso Caveoso. In this spectacular place, immersed in a setting that is unique in the world, 5 life-size bronze statues representing young people from Matera have been placed near a small fountain. In particular, a boy leaning against the wall watches a girl who is about to fill a water jug at the well; At the same time, another guy comes forward and hands a rose to the girl, who seems to return his interest.

This romantic work of art was conceived and designed by designers Enzo Viti and Teresa Lupo and later created by Neapolitan sculptor Domenico Sepe. Since its inauguration, which took place on September 7th, 2020, this monument has aroused the interest and appreciation of numerous tourists, whose gaze is literally captured and catapulted into the past, at the center of a scene that today can only belong to the past.
