The lake is a quarry pond, created as a result of sand and gravel quarrying from the late 1960s to the 1980s. In the initial phase it was popularly called "Lago Laprello" (the quarry pond in the Heinsberg district of Lieck is also called Lago Laprello, after the gravel mining company), it then got its official name after Adolf Freiherr Spies von Büllesheim from Ratheim, who belonged to this was a member of the Bundestag for the district of Heinsberg at the time.
