Plants were an integral part of human life in the Middle Ages, functioning as food, aroma, medicine, textile fibre, paint, soap and much more. They also had a symbolic meaning related to spiritual life. In the garden of the Rocca Borromeo, the aim was to recreate the ambience of this complex and fascinating world. Through the study of texts and iconographies, the plants known and used at the time were identified, searched for and brought back as far as possible.

It was only a few years ago when a large medieval-style garden was built on the castle grounds. Furnished in a clearing with orientation towards Lake Maggiore, manuscripts and ancient manuscripts were included in the concept of the garden. In this garden the exhibition "Il Paradiso in Terra" was organized in 2008, which was very well received. The gardens are deliberately reminiscent of other plant paradises in the region, such as the Botanical Garden of the Isola Madre.
