The castle has its origins in an estate district that the burgraves of Dohna founded around the year 1000. The beginnings of the castle can be found in an outwork documented in 1307, which its owners, the lords of Kospoth, expanded into a manor in the 16th century. In 1661, Carl Freiherr von Friesen acquired the manor and had a new castle built next to the church from 1662, the previous manor castle became a brewery

Some of the castle's foundations are up to 600 years old. For a long time, the castle was neglected and showing its age, but thanks to extensive renovations completed in 2022, it now shines in its former glory.
