The castle has its origins in an estate district that the burgraves of Dohna founded around the year 1000. The beginnings of the castle can be found in an outwork documented in 1307, which its owners, the lords of Kospoth, expanded into a manor in the 16th century. In 1661, Carl Freiherr von Friesen acquired the manor and had a new castle built next to the church from 1662, the previous manor castle became a brewery

Predecessor buildings at the site of the Großcotta church already existed in the 14th century. At the end of the 15th century, a new building was erected, which was rebuilt or extended several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was already a parish church in the 16th century; Kleincotta and Neundorf were affiliated. Around 1620, it received its stocky church tower.
