Glückauf-Park in Gelsenkirchen Hassel on the former site of the coking plant

    Hiking

In the 1950s, a central coking plant was built here on land that had previously been used for agriculture. It replaced the old coking plant that stood on the neighboring mine site in Westerholt. It was shut down in September 1999, and the power plant was shut down a few years later. The coking plant and power plant were demolished. While a new residential area was soon built on the power plant site, the area on the other side of the railway lines remained unused for a few years.

The Hassel coking plant was shut down in 1999, and the buildings were demolished in 2003 and 2004. Since then, the area of the former Hassel coking plant has been unused. From 2016 to 2020, an ecologically demanding open space with a high quality of stay was created on an area of more than 30 hectares - the Hassel district park. Since June 2020, it has enriched the local recreational offering in the district.

Edit 2024: Since May, there has been a beer garden in the park again.
