Major Günther Zöller was commandant of the Urlau Army Ammunition Depot from March 1945. In the final days of the war, the depot was to be demolished under the "scorched earth" order—including thousands of tons of poison gas ammunition. Zöller courageously refused this order and surrendered the depot to French troops without a fight on April 28, 1945. In doing so, he saved the Allgäu region from a devastating poison gas catastrophe and saved thousands of lives.
