This canal, also called Seriöla, moves for more than 20 kilometers crossing the Bergamo area along a north-east / south-west axis from Albino, Nembro, Alzano, Ranica, Torre Boldone, Bergamo, Treviolo and Curno.

The fluvial derivation was traced from the end of the 12th century, when the Barbarossa had to grant the Municipalities of the Lombard League the rights to freely exploit the waters.

The three city waterways, the Morla, the Tremana and the Quisa, had a torrential character and an unreliable flow, while a regular and always usable flow was needed to irrigate fields, move mills, hammers, spinning wheels, water livestock, feed wash houses.

Other rivers, including the Adda, the Oglio and the Brembo, had too deep riverbeds, unlike the Serio which ran in a wider and higher bed.
