The Basilica of San Martino Vescovo of Alzano Lombardo was built in 1659 on the site of a pre-existing fifteenth-century church, of which today only the stone bell tower remains.
Designed by Gerolamo Quadrio, proto-architect of the Milan Cathedral, the church was elevated to the rank of Basilica Minore in 1923, on the occasion of the commemoration of its foundation (1023).

The funding for the total reconstruction came from a huge inheritance. On March 13, 1656, the rich merchant Nicolò Valle died, leaving the Fabbriceria San Martino heir to his patrimony of 70,000 gold scudi.

The capital, consisting of movable property and real estate, was managed by the Mint of Venice until the Napoleonic campaigns, only to be completely canceled with the annexation of the territory to the French state and the subsequent birth of the Kingdom of Italy.

The Mint annually delivered to the Bergamo Tax Chamber more than 3,500 scudi for the construction of the new church, whose works officially began on April 3, 1659, with the placing of the first stone.

A monumental building was built, with three naves of five bays each, of which the central one was wider and higher than the lateral ones.

The central nave was covered by a barrel vault grafted onto the white marble columns of the base, in a composite style. The two aisles were covered with sails, stuccoed in correspondence with the ribs, in harmony with the sculptural decoration of the "ribbon" of the central nave, the work of Giovan Angelo Sala (executed between 1659 and 1670).

The plan was then moved by eight side chapels, each dedicated to one or more saints of great popular devotion.
