Until the 18th century, this district was reserved exclusively for the tanners' special trade. The tall half-timbered houses mostly date from the 17th and 18th centuries, but the "Quartier des Tanneurs" itself is much older.
The characteristic houses are mainly located in the Rue des Tanneurs along the watercourse, on the canal of the same name. The buildings are narrow and tall, have no basement and are built on a stone foundation. The high roofs often have several floors, some of which are set back, allowing the tanners to dry their hides there.

Until the Revolution, there was a tower next to the Canal des Tanneurs. A chapel was attached to it - the Saint Michael's Chapel - which was first mentioned in the 12th century and was part of the original city wall.

This part of town, which was left to decay in the last century, narrowly escaped demolition and was extensively and lovingly restored in 1974 by the monument office and the city of Colmar.
