The Hanoverian Landwehr was part of the border security system in the run-up to the city fortifications of Hanover. The Landwehr consisting of a hedge-lined wall with a ditch probably surrounded the entire medieval city of Hanover. Remains can only be found in the eastern part in the city forest of Eilenriede. At the street passages there were watch towers and houses, which have mostly been preserved as excursion restaurants.

In the middle of the 14th century, against the background of the Lüneburg War of Succession (1370-1388), a landwehr was established as an advanced fortification system with watch towers to protect Hanover. In the Great Privilege of 1392, the city of Hanover was expressly granted the right to set up land defenses for fortification. The area between the towers was secured by earthworks and ditches planted with hedges and curbs. The Landwehr probably surrounded the whole of Hanover, only parts of the Eilenriede forest area have survived. The first section, about 8 km long, was built around 1341 as the "Lüneburg Landwehr" with the ship ditch that is still preserved today. It ran roughly parallel to today's Messeschnellweg to the north-east from the former Warthaus Steuerthieb in Eilenriede to the Altwarmbüchener Moor. In 1373 the militia to Misburg was established with a length of about 2 km. Other subsystems were the "Hohe Landwehr" and the "Spitze Landwehr" between Döhrener and Kirchröder Turm. The former moat of the Landwehr has been preserved to this day in the Landwehrgraben on the southern edge of the Eilenriede.
