Here was from about 15 BC. BC to 50 AD the Celtic oppidum Boiodurum, on the site of which the Roman fort Batavis was built around 150. Around 280 the camp village of Castra Batava was built at the tip of the promontory. The fort was cleared in late Roman times, and the ducal court, first in Bavaria (7th century) and later in Carolingian (8th century), became a bishopric in 739.
