    History of Obertheres Castle

Obertheres Castle in Bavaria dates back to a former Benedictine monastery, of which only the four corner towers, the gatehouse and some outbuildings remain today. The monastery church was demolished at the beginning of the last century and unfortunately no longer exists.

The building was erected between 1042 and 1045 by Bishop Luidger from Bamberg and subsequently used by Benedictine monks. Around 1720 the monastery was completely rebuilt. Abbot Gregor II Fuchs had it built in the Baroque style. The end of the monastery came in 1803 with secularization. After the monastery church was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, as mentioned above, the owners changed hands repeatedly. It was not until 1856 that Obertheres Castle was bought by Henry von Swaine, an English nobleman. He managed the site, which also included large tracts of land.

Today, concerts are often held in the castle, but a visit is not possible as the building is inhabited.

Originally built as a Benedictine abbey of St. Stephan and Vitus, the conversion of the former monastery buildings into a palace complex began after 1804.
