The Niegripp lock as part of the ERM is located in the Niegripp district of the city of Burg north of Magdeburg. It was built between 1936 and 1938 and connects the Elbe to the Elbe-Havel Canal via the Niegripper connecting canal.
Until the Hohenwarthe double savings lock and the canal bridge over the Elbe were put into operation, the route via the Niegripp lock, the Elbe and the Rothenseer Canal was the only east-west connection between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal.
