From the middle of the 13th century, the archbishoprics of Cologne and Trier jointly owned the complex and had their respective shares managed by burgraves. Each half therefore had its own keep, its own residential and farm buildings and a separate entrance.

From the beginning of the 16th century, the double castle gradually fell into disrepair and was completely ruined by destruction during the Palatinate War of Succession. Robert Allmers (1872-1951) from Varel, co-founder of the local Hansa-Automobil Gesellschaft and from 1914 director of the Bremen Hansa-Lloyd-Werke, acquired the plant in 1911 and had some of it rebuilt. The castle is still privately owned, but can be visited from March to mid-November for a fee. According to the monument protection law of Rhineland-Palatinate, it is a protected cultural monument and entered in the state monument list. The entire complex is designated as a monument zone. In addition, Thurant Castle is a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention and is marked with the blue and white protective symbol.
