Recommended is a hike to the volcano Eldfell. From the harbor, it is about 1.2-2 km walk, until you reach the trail to the Eldfell. Once at the top, you can still feel the heat radiating from the rock, even if the eruption is more than 40 years ago. And above all, you have a great view of the entire island and the mainland. Depending on how you walk (there are several ways possible) and whether you continue your walk on foot elsewhere, there are different times - plans about 1.5-2 hours.

The Eldfell is a volcano with a 200m high cinder cone on Heimaey. It formed without warning in a volcanic eruption a few hundred meters outside the town of Heimaey on January 23, 1973. The volcano has been dormant since the eruptions ended in July 1973. On its summit you have a great all-round view over almost the entire island
