The St. Georgen silver smelter is located in the Schneeberg-Neustädtler mining landscape and is therefore one of the many montane artifacts on the mining educational trail.
The electoral silver smelting works, built around 1665, are located 60 meters north-east of the Siebenschlehen stamp mill in Schneeberg-Neustädtel. The name is reminiscent of the older smelting site of the historically significant Schneeberger Grube St. Georg. The two-storey building, which originally had various extensions, was used to process silver ores containing bismuth, cobalt and nickel. The St. Georgenhütte is the only smelting works in the western Ore Mountains that has been largely preserved in its original condition. The ores were processed using metallurgical processes known from descriptions by Georgius Agricola and Lazarus Ercker. Today, the silver smelting works are part of the UNESCO World Heritage mining region of the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří in the Schneebeerg mining landscape.
