After the Second World War, the town of Espelkamp became a place of refuge for many displaced persons. The first church to be built in the city was the Catholic Church in 1952. Initially, as a parish vicarage, it bore the name Liebfrauengemeinde. Raised to the status of a parish in 1977, it is called St. Marien, after Mary, the mother of Jesus. Patronal festival is August 15th. Refugees from the former eastern German territories formed the core of the community.
