Großes Torfmoor

The large peat bog in the area of Lübbecke and Hille is the only raised bog in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located directly in the north of the Wiehengebirge and extends over an area of 467 hectares. Characteristic of the damp moor are the small, dark ponds, the heather plants, high observation towers and small birch groves. The moor is a special ecosystem that you can explore on several hiking trails.

In autumn you can marvel at the faded heathland, the colorful and contrasting moor landscape with its many characteristic mini lakes, the so-called moor biotopes, in which the plants and tree stumps are reflected, and of course photograph them...

+++The moor is characterized by 3 hiking trails, which are marked on posts in blue, red and yellow.
+++2, 2.5 and 7.5 km long paths await visitors.
+++ Sufficient notice and information boards make the moor a very interesting place for excursions for young and old, i.e. also for families with children.

+++ I was particularly impressed by the Moorschnucken. These serve to protect the moor, similar to the sheep in the north to protect the dyke.
+++You are near P6 (car park 6) at the south tower.

I use the cycle paths around the Great Torfmoor several times a year, including well-known cycle routes such as the "Lübbecker Landweg" (which circles the moor to the north and east). Everywhere along the way there is an opportunity to stop and experience the fascinating world of the moor with all your senses. Especially if you are there alone or in a small group. If you don't dare to go it alone, I recommend taking part in one of the many guided tours there. I myself have been leading ADFC tours on these routes ("Lübbecker Landweg" and "Rund um den Wiehen") for years, again in 2022 on September 18th.

Just a small note. It's not the only high moor in NRW, there's another one in the Gütersloh district in Marienfeld, the Hühnermoor.🙂

The lung gentian will bloom in the fenced area from August onwards. It is under nature protection.

There is always something to see and watch here.
