Urho Kekkonen lived in Tamminiemi for 25 years as President of Finland from 1956 to 1981, and beyond that he stayed in the house for another 5 years after his retirement until his death in 1986.
In 1987 the Office of the State Council decided that Tamminiemi should become a museum. The President's heirs made this possible by donating Mr Kekkonen's personal property to the museum's collections. The museum is administered by the National Board of Antiquities and is part of the National Museum of Finland.
