“There have been three barracks camps on the Sterkrade colliery site since 1943: a prisoner of war camp, an Eastern workers camp and a youth labor camp for young “Eastern workers”. The barracks were not heated in winter and not ventilated in summer. The hygienic conditions and supplies were often catastrophic. This caused diseases to spread. All forced laborers suffered from malnutrition. [...] In Oberhausen, around 1,300 forced laborers died due to air raids, illnesses and catastrophic conditions." (Excerpt from the text on the memorial plaque.)

In 2017, 20 students built the outline of a forced labor barracks on a meadow near the wooden winding tower.

It's worth taking a look at the dark chapter of forced labor. In my opinion, a worthy place for reminder and remembrance is being wasted here. Especially with regard to newer right-wing social tendencies.

Not crowded and worth a short break.
