Water cranes were used to supply steam locomotives with large amounts of water for steam generation. The water vapor was emitted into the atmosphere during locomotive operation and had to be refilled regularly. A water crane consists of a vertical tube with a boom tube that can be swung sideways over the tank filler opening of the locomotive or tender. This former water crane was manufactured in Krausewerk Neusalz (Oder), in present-day Poland. The factory existed until 1945, so the water crane probably dates from the 1930s.
