Now a symbol of Pesaro, Arnaldo Pomodoro's Sphere Grande, also known as the "Pomodoro Ball", is a work of contemporary art full of charm. Owned by the Municipality of Pesaro, it was built in 1998 by the great sculptor on a polyester model made in 1967 for the Montreal Expo and from which the original was born which is today in Rome (in front of the main entrance of the Farnesina, headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The imposing sphere rests on the surface of the water, in the center of the large infinity fountain in Piazza della Libertà, a factor that enhances its sphericity and aesthetic lightness. Obtained from a bronze casting, it has a diameter of 3.5 meters; inside there are three-dimensional geometric figures that recall a mechanism.

When you see it for the first time, you will probably stop in surprise - just like I did. The huge sphere that rises in the middle above the circular fountain basin and is reflected in the water makes the two elements into a wonderfully harmonious unit. The creator of the "Big Sphere" is the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro (born 1926), whose works have been present not only in European countries but worldwide for decades; and who has already received numerous awards.
