It is one of the masterpieces of Genoese Baroque. The entire complex, church and oratory, was commissioned by Camillo Pallavicini, a member of the Oratory Fathers (Filippini). Construction began in 1673 and was completed in 1676. The Genoese late Baroque style is expressed not only in the frescoes with their wood and marble carvings, but also in a triumph of gilded and painted stucco. The perspective and ornamentation are the work of Antonio Maria Haffner, while the vault fresco depicting "The Glory of Saint Philip Neri" is by Marcantonio Franceschini. The wooden Pietà by Maragliano is also noteworthy.

GOOD TO KNOW: At just 11 years old, Niccolò Paganini performed as a soloist for the first time in Genoa at the Church of San Filippo Neri on May 26, 1794.
