Of course, the name of the famous seafarer Christopher Columbus / Cristoforo Colombo (born around 1451, died 1506) is known worldwide. Above all, his voyages of discovery that made him famous - from the European mainland, heading west across the Atlantic Ocean, looking for the sea route to India, and discovering America in 1492 (without even realizing it, he believed he had reached his intended goal) - will be included in every history book. Although he undertook these voyages of discovery on behalf of the Spanish royal family, he was originally from what was then the Republic of Genoa. And so, of course, a monument is dedicated to him here, in his old homeland, to honor the city's great son.
