The theater was built in 1955 on the initiative of Rev. Jan Veeger, who directed the first Passion Play in Hertme in 1953 and was appointed pastor of the St. Stephen's Parish in 1952. The first play, Vondel's Joseph in Dothan, was performed on the heath at Wetering in Hertme. Under the auspices of the First Twenties Open Air Festival (ESTO) foundation, a permanent set was created in Bentheim sandstone with the help of many volunteers starting in 1954 on the grounds next to St. Stephen's Church.
