Silvio Benigno Crespi wrote that:

“The public wash-house saves women from traveling a long way with the weight of linen on their backs or arms to go to the river, and run the risk of washing in its raging waters. It is divided into two parts, one of which is used to wash and the other to rinse and, in the latter, about one hundred liters of water per minute enter, which then passes into the first one above a special brush, and is immediately discharged in a manhole ".
