The 'fishing village without a harbour'. Boekhoute or 'Bouchaute' had a fishing port until 1952 until the Dutch closed the Braakman with a dam to reclaim this part of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
Memories of the fishermen and war past are kept alive on the square of Boekhoutedorp. You will find, among other things, the remains of the fishing boat BOU 8 and a statue that honors the shrimp fishermen.
A Fisheries Museum is located in the old Town Hall and in the Holy Cross Church you can visit an exhibition about the village in the Second World War.
