The name Grave (Lat. Gravia, var. Caruo, Carvo and Gravita)[3] comes from graves or moat (graft) and is first mentioned in 1214. A romanticized explanation concerns a Roman army commander Gravio, who is said to have founded a castellum here, but that story has been made up by previous historians.

After the castle of the lord of the Land of Cuijk in Cuijk was destroyed during a punitive expedition after the murder of Floris de Zwarte (1131) and Herman van Cuijk was exiled, he returned around 1138 and built a new castle in Grave. The town grew up around it. In 1233, Grave received city rights from the Duke of Brabant. Grave soon became the largest town in the Land of Cuijk, and it remained the only fortified town. Under Jan I van Cuijk the city experienced a flourishing period.

Grave is a fortified town on the Maas with numerous historic houses, some churches and remains of military activities. Founded at the end of the 13th century by the Lord of the Land of Cuijk, who already had a castle there, the town has a round map and a regular street plan. Although the fortifications were demolished in 1876, their shape can still be seen from the course of a number of canals, which form part of the Graafse Raam.
      Some sights:
      • The St. Elisabeth Church is a large late Gothic cruciform basilica.
      • The Protestant Church is a 15th-century church building that was formerly the chapel of the Franciscan Monastery.
      • The Hampoort, remnant of the fortifications, from 1681.
      • The Maaspoort, a rebuilt gate on the Maaskade.
      • The Arsenal, remnant of the fortifications, from the 17th century.
      • Replica of a punishment horse, in front of St. Elisabeth Church.
The cannons on the Maaskade are of French make.

Very beautiful fortress city. The center is also worth a visit.
