During World War II, prisoners of war were quartered there.
Later, the building was used as a warehouse, gymnasium and homeless shelter.
In 1983, the idea of setting up a memorial in the former synagogue was considered.
In 1985, the association for the preservation of the Affaltrach synagogue was founded.
On November 9, 1988, after a thorough renovation, the building was opened to the public at a ceremony.
Today, the synagogue can be visited as a museum.
