At the age of 53, he retired and came to Lüneburg in 1881.
Instead of settling down, he founded a beautification society, having already recognized the potential of the beautiful natural surroundings of Lüneburg—including the still barren hills of Bockelsberg. He quickly found influential supporters for his idea of creating a park and recreational area there.
