    City Hall, Berneck
The town hall, built around 1500, got its current appearance after renovation in 1943.
The historically valuable town hall underwent a major renovation in the war years 1941/42. The northern extension was demolished, the fire department depot on the ground floor was moved to its current location and the office of the former chancellery on the upper floor was moved to the renovated town hall.

The municipality of Berneck is formed
At the beginning of 1798, the people of the Rhine Valley met on the town hall square in Berneck for a Landsgemeinde, at which it was decided to ask the governing federal towns to renounce their sovereign rights and to release the previous subjects. The subsequent Republic of the Rhine Valley lasted only a few days; the French, praised as liberators, set up the Helvetic Republic. Berneck belonged to the newly created canton of Säntis. After the founding of the canton of St. Gallen in 1803, the municipality began to function independently. The municipal council was appointed, school and church systems were reorganized.
From its sheltered location, Berneck took advantage to grow into the economic center of the middle Rhine Valley. Craftsmen of all kinds settled in Berneck.
