The first documentary record of the site of "Riellos" is found in a precept dated September 9, 878. With the founding of the monastery of Breda in 1038, it came under its direct jurisdiction. In 1169 there is already written evidence that the church of Riells is dedicated to Sant Martí de Tours. In 1957 the parish became part of the Bishopric of Barcelona and the Bishopric of Girona. Sant Martí de Riells is currently the parish church of Riells i Viabrea.

Sant Martí de Riells is a Romanesque church in Riells i Viabrea (Selva) included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.

The church of Sant Martí de Riells is located in the north of the municipality, 510 m above sea level in the valley formed between the hill of Morou and the plain of Fogueres and the hill of the castle of Montsoriu, where the Riells stream.

The current temple dates from the 12th century, although it has undergone many subsequent interventions.

The building, with sober and simple lines, has a belfry that previously occupied a central position, but in the last restoration it has been moved to the right side. It has two eyes and contains two bells, Martina and Mercè.

The façade has a portal composed of a smooth cylindrical archivolt supported on two columns. The capitals are sculpted with floral decoration. The one on the left has a leaf at an angle, based on three concentric incisions and a circular motif that emerges from a vertical stem in the middle of each face. The one on the right also has a leaf on each side but finished with a scroll. In the center of the wall of the façade a circular oculus opens and to the right is a niche with the image of the saint in terracotta.

The interior of the nave is tiled; the walls are of irregular stone, except for the apse which is plastered and painted with three semicircular arch openings with stained glass. On either side are two chapels that open onto the central nave by semicircular stone arches.

To the right of the temple is the attached rectory, which dates from the eighteenth century, and is directly connected to the church by a chapel with a ribbed vault and on the left side is the cemetery.
