It has been part of the Oberhof townscape for 115 years now - the monument to Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, during whose reign, which lasted until 1893, Oberhof began to develop into an important tourist destination. It was donated by the Oberhof hotelier Fritz Fleischer, who owned the "Schweizerhof" hotel - later the "Hotel zum Thüringer Wald" and later the "Ernst-Thälmann-Haus". The monument was inaugurated on August 22nd, 1903 - the 10th anniversary of Duke Ernst II's death. Created by the Berlin sculptor Korn from Gotha in 1902 and 1903 and erected in the center of the town by the spa gardens, it shows a relief image of the duke as a hunter, set in Oberhof granite, surrounded by a spring, game (a doe and calf) and forest. The bronze relief, mounted on a large natural stone, shows a side portrait of Ernst II with a top hat. From 1945 to 1997, the Oberhof coat of arms replaced this relief. And the "weather column" that stands a good 50 meters away was erected in the summer of 1893 - 125 years ago.

The equestrian monument of Ernst II Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha is located at the Kurpark in Oberhof. The bronze plaque attached to a large natural stone shows the portrait of Ernst II with a cylinder. The relief image shows the duke as a hunter, surrounded by game and forest. The equestrian monument is illuminated in the evenings.
