Frontzate is a nearly 15-kilometer walking and cycling path between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide.
During the Great War, this former railway line 74 between Diksmuide and Nieuwpoort served as a strategically important front line. Because the bed is on average over a meter higher than the surrounding polder, the embankment serves as both a defensive line and a flood barrier. Both to the left and right of the old railway bed are brick or concrete structures. Along Frontzate, there are approximately 163 different buildings linked to the period 1914-1918.
Keep your eyes open and follow the trail of wartime history.
Along this route, you'll also encounter several well-preserved bunker complexes.
A perfect opportunity to take a break and delve into the past.
