Fort de Chausey on the Grande-Île of the Chausey archipelago was built between 1859 and 1866 under Napoleon III to secure the archipelago. It served as a prisoner of war camp during the First World War, as a retreat for Louis Renault in the 1920s, and was occupied by German troops during the Second World War. Today, it is home to several fishing families and is open to visitors. The fort is located amidst picturesque beaches, hiking trails, and diverse natural surroundings, and is part of the archipelago known for its tidal ranges of up to 14 meters.
