The building was remodeled in 1772 according to plans by Nicolas Durand and is based on buildings from the 13th century. The 4 lions are by Antoine Lépine. The building is particularly radiant in the evening light.

The hôtel de ville is a classical building built between 1772 and 1776 by the architect Nicolas Durand. It replaced an older town hall from the 16th century that stood on the same site. The town hall is a historic monument protected for its facades, roofs, vestibule, staircase and large salon. It also has a dome, a bell tower and four lion statues in the forecourt that symbolize the power of the city. The famous writer Victor Hugo described the lions as “huge stone dogs that crouched formidably in front of the facade” during his journey along the Rhine with Juliette Drouet.
