The Zähringer Bridge was built in 1924 to replace the large suspension bridge ("Great Bridge") that had existed up until then and was built in 1834 - at the time it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 273 m in length. After the construction of the large Poya Bridge, which can be seen from here, it was closed to traffic.
The upper part of the bridge in particular offers wonderful views of the Saane River (La Sarine), whose deep valley it spans high above, as well as large parts of the old town in the southeast at the river loop with the striking Bern Bridge (covered wooden bridge) and interesting parts of the city fortifications behind it. To the northwest you can look down on the tranquil river valley with a small suspension bridge. To the north the large Poya Bridge appears.
On the southwest side, long stairs lead down from the upper part - past the lower platform, as it is called here - and invite you to take a walk through the old town along the river loop or along the river bank.
