The Singel and Oude Schans are the oldest canals in Amsterdam, marking the city limits until the 16th century. However, when Amsterdam experienced a huge increase in population in the 17th century, the city expanded. In the course of the expansion, the three canals Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht were laid out.

The Bloemenmarkt at Singel 41 is unique in Europe as it is a floating market. The gigantic selection of colorful and fragrant plants is offered on several moored boats west of the Muntplein. The Bloemenmarkt was held in Amsterdam as early as the 17th century and still takes place every day except Sundays. The variety of cut and dried flowers and potted plants on offer is breathtaking.
