The easternmost volcano of the Aegean arc lies on the Greek island of Nisyros. The 9 km wide island is dominated by a 3-4 km wide caldera. The caldera is about 250 m deep. In its southeast is the 300 m diameter Stefanos crater. It contains a geothermal area with fumaroles and mud pots.

The highest elevation on the island is 698 m. It is provided by the Profitis Ilias lava dome. Volcanic manifestations can also be found outside the caldera: in the south-west lies the lava dome of Karaviotis. With a height of 539 m, it is the highest point outside the caldera.
