The walls, as a whole, date back to the time of the foundation of the town (1333): in some points, however, it no longer corresponds to the original one: the best preserved and most easily visible part is the one that goes from the PORTA NUOVA to the so-called "Tomb ", to the TORRE DEL BELVEDERE and then to the PORTA FIORENTINA. The "Via delle MURA" once ran inside the walls.
The Castle Doors were originally four:
- LA PORTA FIORENTINA: dating back, like the others, to the time of the construction of the walls, but later (16th century) raised: the frontal battlements that defined the original peak are still visible.
- THE NEW DOOR (later PORTA DELL'ALTOPASCIO): reopened and raised in 1598: it owes its current name to this fact.
- LA PORTA A LUCCA or PORTICCIOLA: originally smaller in size, it was rebuilt and enlarged between 1570 and 1594.
- THE PESCIA DOOR: closed since time immemorial, it is however visible on the north corner of the walls
