Kranenburg was founded in the 13th century around an old castle. As a town on the border of the counties of Kleve and Gelre, it soon acquired a moat and city walls for defense. Even city rights in 1294. Kranenburg castle has long since disappeared.

    City wall
The city wall can still be seen in the south of Kranenburg. Here the wall forms part of the houses that were later built on top of it. Nowadays, the walls no longer scare people, but play a leading role in beautiful scenes with corners and surprising vistas. The most striking part of the wall is the mill tower, a former windmill that was built high on the wall to catch a lot of wind. The mill now houses a museum.

The medieval city wall has been well preserved. Houses have now been erected on the inside, but on the outside you can still see the ancient city wall very well.

Stroll along Kranenburg's medieval city wall – with its brick walls, towers, and houses built against the wall. Take a moment at the Mühlenturm (the mill tower) for panoramic views of the city and the tranquil Wall and Graben districts. It's the perfect spot for atmosphere, history, and beautiful photo opportunities.
