Did you know that there are not one, but actually two Twente channels? Because of the branch to Almelo, this canal is often spoken of in plural. Ideas to dig a canal for a better supply of raw materials for Twente, known for its textile industry, emerged in the 19th century. The canal was also intended to serve as a route for the supply of coal from the Limburg mines. The actual digging of the canal did not begin until decades later, in 1930.
