Three decades after the death of the republic refugee Harry Weltzin, a memorial for the GDR border dead is inaugurated at Kneese. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 31, not far from where he died on September 4, 1983.

Original parts of the former border fortification were erected for the Mahmal. According to Michael Markus Schulz of the Union of Victims' Associations of Communist Tyranny (UOKG), it is the first memorial site for GDR border dead in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. "The special thing about her is that we have built her with young people and those affected - former GDR home-children and former inmates of the former children's prison Bad Freienwalde", says Schulz. It was important, even the young generation here with
    included.

Born in Wismar, Harry Weltzin died in 1983 during an escape attempt by a SM 70 self-firing system. Two of these plants were triggered when he dug a hole under the border fence. At the time, Weltzin separated 50 meters from the Staastgebiet of the FRG.

A story that should not be swept under the carpet.

Harry Weltzin was only 28 years old. His life ended on September 4, 1983, not far from the village of Kneese, during an attempted escape to neighboring Schleswig-Holstein. The Wismar native had touched a signal element placed underground while undermining the border fortifications, triggering two SM-70 fragmentation mines installed by the GDR. When GDR border guards found him, he was only about 50 meters from the territory of the Federal Republic, according to Stasi files.

Michael Schulz from the "Union of Victims' Associations of Communist Tyranny," among others, worked to ensure that the fate of Harry Weltzin, a graduate electrical engineer, is not forgotten.

A 3.30-meter-wide and three-meter-high fence segment was erected from three galvanized expanded metal border fence panels and two posts, and a memorial plaque was placed on it.

I think it's very important that such terrible events are remembered here, so that they are not forgotten and hopefully become a thing of the past.
