The property was built in 1555.
The floor area is 104 square meters and it is believed to have been built on the old existing foundations of a former building from the 15th century that was destroyed in the city fire of 1548.In 1663 the building was thoroughly renovated.
It was then given the striking Baroque staircase on which judgments were announced and a new main entrance leading from the stairs to the building. The coat of arms of Lingen with the three towers can be seen in the facade above the entrance. These stand in front of the three former city gates: “Burgtor”, “Lookentor” and “Mühlentor”.Since 1952 there has been a carillon in the tower that plays five times a day. Since 2002, a puppet show has also been added that appears daily at 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00.In 2001 the town hall underwent extensive renovation work. Since then it has been used as a special location for receptions and weddings.
It has the status of a national monument.

The historic town hall in Lingen an der Ems is considered the most important landmark of the city and, although remarkably small even for town halls of its time, occupies a dominant position in terms of urban planning.

With a floor space of 104 square meters, it is a small town hall, but it dominates the market square.
In 2001, extensive reconstruction and renovation work was completed. Since then, Lingen's landmark has provided the appropriate setting for celebratory occasions such as receptions and civil weddings in the city.
