The Schmitt'sche Grube is the largest body of water in the Schwanheimer Dune area. It is completely fenced in and now serves as a refuge for cormorants, kingfishers, little ringed plovers, great crested grebes and other endangered bird species. But a number of endangered amphibian species such as the common frog, the green toad and the smooth newt have also found refuge here.frankfurt.de/themen/umwelt-und-gruen/orte/stadtgewaesser/teiche-seen-tuempel/schmittsche-grube

The Schwanheimer Düne nature reserve is one of the very few inland dunes in Europe. It has a size of 58.5 hectares and is located in the west of Frankfurt - Schwanheim.
The special feature of the location of the nature reserve is the distance from the sea. Actually, inland dunes only occur in the immediate vicinity of the sea. Therefore, so far from the sea, it offers a very special habitat for rare animal and plant species.
It has been a nature reserve since 1984 and has even been an FFH area and Natura2000 zone since 2003.
South of the Schwanheim dunes is the Höchst Industrial Park, with almost 20,000 employees. For them, the nature reserve is a popular local recreation area.
