The Monopteros was one of the first buildings in the grove: it was erected at Steinwöhrlein in 1804, the first year after the Citizens' Park was established. Like every real landscape park, the Bamberg grove also needed a small temple to "create an atmosphere". As in an English garden, visitors were supposed to walk through a walk-in landscape painting and repeatedly see unexpected, picturesque landscapes. There wasn't much money, so a pavilion was taken from Seehof Castle, which had previously belonged to the Archbishop of Bamberg.

With the bridge over the Hollergraben, the Monopteros presented a picturesque image that perfectly matched the romantic ideas of contemporaries: the originally steep domed roof was painted blue on the inside and had a golden knob at the top.

The Monopteros was also a popular viewing point! From the specially raised hill, you could see the towers of the city to the north, and to the south the view fell across the river to the gardens on the Regnitz slope.

However, with the construction of the car bridge in 1973, the wide, peaceful view was over. Since then, traffic has raced over the Monopteros. The once green meadow hill was reinforced with stone steps and is now part of a modern water landscape made of concrete and stone.

Interesting building, as of 28.5.24, enclosed for restoration work.
