    Ruhland was an important customs and border station between Electoral Saxony and Upper Lusatia, sometimes belonging to Brandenburg, sometimes to Bohemia, and then to Saxony from 1635. That is why there is also a postal miles column there. The tavern for the customs house, located on the Black Elster, also dates from this period. The Ruhlander Column dates from 1732. It was removed in 1830 by decree of the magistrate and used as gutter stones on the city pumps. Since 2012 there has been a replica of the Electoral Saxon Column on the market square, right next to the market fountain with the Brandenburg coat of arms.
