    Herb, perennial and orchards, Heiligkreuztal
From the very beginning, the Cistercian order took special care of the monastery garden. He served for food - basic supply in the isolated location of the monasteries.
The convent garden was part of the sisters' enclosure. It was a place of reflection, plant cultivation and monastery medicine.
A special feature of the monastery complex in Heiligkreuztal is the painting of the cathedral's ribbed vault, which was redesigned at the beginning of the 16th century. Abbess Veronika von Rietheim commissioned Jörg Ziegler, the "Master of Messkirch", to paint a wide variety of herbs, flowers, berries and trees that he found in the monastery garden in the vault. The vaulted ceiling symbolizes the view through to the sky. This is how a “herb heaven” was created, the main plants of which are now planted in the monastery herb garden.
The Heiligkreuztal monastery salt is made from the flowers and herbs of the monastery herb garden.

      Inner cloister wall, Heiligkreuztal
The entire monastery complex is surrounded by an inner wall and a 2 km long outer wall. Like the entire complex, this is a listed building and encloses an area of 16 hectares.
All buildings belonging to the Heiligkreuztal monastery are located within the inner cloister wall. The outer cloister wall encloses agricultural areas - fields, meadows, horse pastures, orchards - and some beehives. The site is traversed by the Soppenbach, which also feeds the Mühlenweiher and was covered with fir trees until 1836.
In the part called the Chapel Garden, the St. Nicholas Chapel, first mentioned in 1396 and demolished in 1816, stood at what is now the Andelfinger Gate. Separated from the inner wall, the former convent garden extended to the buildings. Today there are shady maple trees in the so-called Herrenhausgarten. On another part fruit trees and berry bushes grow.
