Sassnitz station was opened on July 1, 1891. It is the northern end of the Stralsund - Sassnitz railway line. The entrance building with the goods shed is now a listed building. The station now has only one platform and is served by the RE 9 Rostock - Stralsund - Sassnitz line.

In 1962, Sassnitz train station had a total of 20 tracks with a total length of 2,589 meters.
Sassnitz station was always served by all long-distance trains on the Royal Line between Germany and Sweden. In 1914, two pairs of express trains ran between Berlin and Sweden over the route. This long-distance train service remained largely constant for decades - apart from times of war.
