The horses on the Geltinger Birk peninsula, together with the small, quiet Galloways, are intended to help develop the landscape and thus protect nature.

Their origins go back to the Tarpans, which lived in inaccessible forest and swamp areas of eastern Poland and Lithuania until around 1800. The farmers in the area used these small, roaming herds when needed. This gave rise to the Konik breed ("Konik" = small horse), which was later systematically bred in Poland. These small, undemanding horses often retain their mouse-grey colour, the eel stripe on their backs and zebra stripes on their legs as wild characteristics. Their withers are around 130 - 140 cm high.

Since the 1980s, Koniks have been introduced to the Netherlands for natural development. Since they had soon multiplied so much there that the areas were slowly becoming scarce, the Dutch willingly donated ponies to the Geltinger Birk nature reserve project.

our highlight on the Birk tour. We discovered the Koniks in Noorgaardts Bruch - a small detour at the bridge.

Konik is a pony breed from Central and Eastern Europe. Numerous Koniks have a huge area in the Geltinger Birk and we were very happy to admire the small horses and their young from a distance.
